Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located many other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
