Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
