The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
