Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
