Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
