Trump's System of Punishment and Favor

Donald Trump's insatiable desire for retribution has swiftly morphed into a structured system. Within the year since his election, the chief executive's rage and caprices have adopted the shape of government actions in a manner comparable to earlier repressive systems. Government officials who resist his demands are summarily removed and replaced by supporters. Critical leaders who confront him risk legal action, trial and sanctions. Opponents have been labeled under executive directives as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with prosecution as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Remade

All situation involving legal action of political opponents and leniency for his allies exhibits its own particular characteristics. But, despite their specific character, they embody expressions of what has arisen as a calculated approach. Those incidents are far from isolated. His cleansing of federal prosecutors and law enforcement personnel, accompanied by his appointment of supporters in senior positions, started swiftly, soon assumed a regularity, and has now been formed into a regime. DoJ and the FBI have been transformed into ideological bodies under his explicit command to implement his wishes. Unfairness has been turned into routine. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Management is more concerned with targeting the leader's perceived enemies than they are with defending our public welfare.

Inside the Apparatus

The foundation of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of three ex- high-ranking law enforcement agents lodged in September in the US district court in the capital against FBI director Kash Patel and justice department head a key figure for unlawful firing in “a campaign of revenge against them for what administration figures judged to be a inability to exhibit proper allegiance”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the previous acting FBI director, details a discussion in which the director “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his conduct”.

He had sought to protect FBI agents from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. Patel told him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the White House and justice department – had instructed him to fire anyone who they determined as having been involved in a legal probe against him. The filing continues: “The director explained that he had to dismiss the personnel his superiors told him to dismiss, because his capacity to retain his own role relied on the ouster of the personnel who worked on matters involving the leader. He explained that there was no option he or him could do to stop these or any other dismissals, because ‘the agency sought to incarcerate the leader in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” When Driscoll informed the director he was violating the FBI's own regulations, Patel allegedly said “he understood that and he realized the nature of the immediate dismissals were likely illegal”.

Broad Impact

Since the director's claimed acknowledgment to him, the justice department and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and redirected for Trump's revenge apparatus. Multiple of the FBI's top officials were fired or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the administration. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at the justice department have taken a “deferred resignation program”. At least seven DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, stepped down in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in abandoning the criminal prosecution against the city leader, a political figure, in exchange for his collaboration with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of immigrants. The public integrity section of the justice department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been severely reduced: the majority of its staff has left. 33% of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit implementing ecological regulations has seen departures of 50% its management.

Rewards and Punishments

Concerning the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, quit in objection against what she labeled as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, his “border czar,” was present as the agent with Adams on television to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in NYC.”. And, Emil Bove, formerly the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who negotiated the deal, was granted an appellate federal judgeship, a possible stepping stone to the judicial branch.

The president's exemption for offenses committed while in office, provided by the extraordinary ruling of the conservative on the judicial body, thus blocking his legal action over the political violence and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the basis on which he relies to shield his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to authorize misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision permeates his government and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has spread. As a past leader's legal adviser he commented about the Watergate
